Mister Jean-Pierre and his staff have begun the cutting of the 6000 olive trees of the Moulin du Calanquet. The cutting is very useful for higher production, to limit the alternation, to curb the aging and eliminate the superfluous of wood.
The cutting is done after periods of risks and cold, as a consequence it is an operation done in spring
The shaping cutting for young olive trees :
Step 1 : When the tree is not taller than 1m50, it is not necessary to cut it. However, it is important to check the following points : shapping in one trunk, removal of the lower branches, keeping of the central stem.
Step 2 : when the tree is taller than 1m50, the shaping cuting begins. We select 5 carpenter branches by eliminating the central stem at the beginning of a carpenter branche.
The sustainment cutting :
Concerning the sustainment cutting which is done every year, 4 elements are essential :
The light : all the leaves of the olive tree must be under the light.
The connection between leaves / wood : the leaf is essential for the well-being of the tree. Leaves have a life span of 3 years. It is as a consequence very important to stimulate the creation of leaves by eliminating the died wood.
The airing : the air must circulate in all the tree, this is why it is important to avoid the creation of too many leaves.
The connection leaves / roots : the equilibrium of the different rythms of the olive trees are given according to the roots (mineral feeding) and leaves (carbon feeding). The cutting favours the developping. A severe cutting causes an excessive development and a diminution of the production.
The regenerating cutting :
It is a cutting done to tree after a long period of disuse. The aim is to have the creation of new branches. It is a very severe cutting but that will be very useful for the olive tree.
